Mission of the Center for the Art of Translation

The Center for the Art of Translation is a nonprofit whose mission is to bring literature to English-language readers. It publishes fiction and poetry from over 50 languages, conducts events throughout the year that connect readers with international authors and translators, and provides education programs for local schools that teach students to appreciate literature and understand other cultures through translation.

The Center aims to promote a truly global community, creating a world where writers and readers can cross both boundaries of borders and of language.

We accomplish these goals through three primary programs:

  • TWO LINES, an internationally acclaimed annual anthology of world literature in translation
  • Poetry Inside Out, a school program that improves language arts skills while bridging classroom gaps through translation—the only program of its kind
  • Lit&Lunch, a series of events throughout the San Francisco Bay Area that showcases prominent international authors and translators—now available to be heard online
