CAT Programs

The Literary Program includes the publication of TWO LINES, founded in 1994, and a series of public readings of international literature at venues around the Bay Area. The program also offers symposia and lectures on the art of translation. TWO LINES and the literary readings series play a pivotal role in preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of diverse communities by bringing world literature—both contemporary and classic—to new audiences.

Poetry Inside Out (PIO) is a literary arts program serving bilingual public school students in elementary and middle schools in the San Francisco Bay Area. PIO brings literary translators into Bay Area public schools to work with bilingual students. The PIO program seeks to demonstrate the benefits of bilingualism, encourage language learning, and promote reading and translation skills through a series of activities, culminating in anthologies of student work and public poetry recitals.

Currently, the PIO program works predominantly with Latino students who are bilingual in Spanish, but a pilot program to expand to Chinese bilingual classrooms is in the works.

Cultural Forum Series:CAT has hosted three interdisciplinary arts events as part of its Cultural Forum series. Each event featured the music, dance and poetry of a single culture. Most recently, CAT presented the Sundanese culture of West Java, Indonesia.

The poetry and fiction featured in CAT’s publications, readings, and events represent over 50 countries, including Cuba, South Africa, Abkhazia, Russia, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Buryat Republic, France, and Israel.
