On April 3, 2012, translators Jay Rubin and J. Philip Gabriel—best-known as the main English translators of Haruki Murakmai's novels and short stories—discussed their work with the Japanese master of the surreal's latest book, 1Q84. The event got off to a proper start with a discussion of one of the primary questions surrounding 1Q84: how do you pronounce its title? Jay Rubin canvassed the audience for answers, which ranged from "nineteen-eighty-four" to "eye-que-eight-four" (which Rubin ruled out, since the first character is a number one). He then went on to a discussion of the role that the title plays in the novel . . .

The Center for the Art of Translation Partners with Teachers & Writers to Bring Poetry Inside Out to New York City
June 3, 2010—The Center for the Art of Translation is pleased to announce a partnership with New York City's Teachers & Writers to bring its innovative Poetry Inside Out (PIO) curriculum to public schools in NYC. The PIO curriculum–a cross-cultural literacy program that captures the synergy between creative writing and translation–will be implemented by Teachers & Writers at select NYC public school during the 2010-11 academic year. Chinese, Korean, and Belgian Authors Among Those Honored in 2010 Northern California Book Reviewers Translation Awards
April 8, 2010—The Northern California Book Reviewers announce the finalists in their annual awards for translated fiction and poetry. Ranging from a career-spanning compilation from Korea's leading poet to the latest translated novel from Jean-Philippe Toussaint, one of Belguim's most celebrated authors, the NCBR translation awards honor this year's essential translations into English.
