"I'm going to tell you a lot of love stories today," Yiyun Li said to begin her Two Voices event on the masterful Chinese writer Shen Congwen. Although little-known in the U.S., Congwen has been a hugely influential author on Li--as she declared during the event, Congwen's letters were one of the three books she brought with her when she emigrated from China to the United States in 1996.

On April 3, 2012, translators Jay Rubin and J. Philip Gabriel—best-known as the main English translators of Haruki Murakmai's novels and short stories—discussed their work with the Japanese master of the surreal's latest book, 1Q84. The event got off to a proper start with a discussion of one of the primary questions surrounding 1Q84: how do you pronounce its title? Jay Rubin canvassed the audience for answers, which ranged from "nineteen-eighty-four" to "eye-que-eight-four" (which Rubin ruled out, since the first character is a number one). He then went on to a discussion of the role that the title plays in the novel . . .

We at the Center want to offer a hearty thanks to our community for reaching deep into your pockets this holiday season and supporting our year-end campaign. With donations still trickling in, we've received close to $30,000 to help fund another year of the Center's programs.
Here are just a few things this money will go toward:
- Hiring a Poetry Inside Out Outreach Manager to help bring translation-based education to even more schools in 2011.
- Continuing our 2010-11 program of events--the Center's most extensive yet--and maintaining this momentum in 2011-12. And remember, those who can't attend in person can listen to all of our events free of charge online.
- Expanding the translations we offer for free online in TWO LINES Online.
- Publishing a new group of titles in our TWO LINES World Library series of regional translation anthologies.
Thanks to all of you for helping make these programs thrive in 2011! And if you see us at an event or a conference this year, please come up and say hi, so we can thank you in person and share the latest news from the Center.
