Poetry Inside Out (PIO) is conducting a training for prospective instructors in San Francisco on two Saturdays, January 28 and February 4.
Poetry Inside Out (PIO) is the Center for the Art of Translation’s literary arts program that fosters imagination and builds students’ problem solving, critical thinking, and literacy skills through the translation and composition of poetry.
Since 2000, Poetry Inside Out has led residencies in elementary through high school classrooms and afterschool programs throughout the Bay Area. Our World Poetry Curriculum covers a variety of languages reflecting the diversity of the area’s student population. Residencies consist of 16 one-hour lessons, which may take place between one and three times per week.
In November of 2010 we conducted a successful instructor training and were able to place most of our trainees in classrooms during the 2010-11 school year. We hope this year to add additional PIO instructors to meet the expanding demand for our curriculum. Successful trainees typically volunteer with an experienced instructor for one full 8-week residency before being placed in their own independent classroom; this requirement may be waived for seasoned candidates.
Interested candidates should have classroom experience, a strong background in poetry, and interest in literary translation. They need not be fluent in a second language, but familiarity with various languages and world poetry is a plus. Flexibility in scheduling is also helpful, as we must work within the schools’ schedules.
Training will be held in San Francisco (near Montgomery BART) on two Saturdays, January 28 and February 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants must attend both sessions. Attendance will be limited to a maximum of fifteen participants, and the cost is $150 per person.
