René Depestre

René Depestre is a Hatian poet and activist. During the Duvalier regime, he lived in exile in Cuba, and founded the Casa de las Americas publishing house. He has won such prestigious awards as the Prix Goncourt (1982) and a Guggenheim Fellowship (1995). He is a special envoy of UNESCO for Haiti.
