Two Lines Press’s first book this fall brings you fiction from Croatian journalist and novelist Damir Karakaš, who relays an epic in village miniature: the story of a father, a son, a farm, a family dog, and a nation’s descent into fascism.
If you’re aching to learn more about this translation, fear not! You can join us at the Transnational Literature Series at Brookline Booksmith(opens in a new tab) for an online event with author Damir Karakaš and translator Ellen Elias-Bursać to discuss and celebrate the release of Celebration(opens in a new tab). They will be in conversation with writer Zain Khalid.
If you’re a teacher or administrator interested in bringing poetry and translation to your classroom and building classroom practices that will expand your students’ cultural awareness, attention to language, creativity, and critical thinking skills, the Poetry Inside Out Teaching Fellowship(opens in a new tab) might be for you!
The Teaching Fellowship—which comes with $7,500 of support for each participating teacher—is designed for both emerging and experienced language arts educators. The two-year Fellowship will run from October 2024 through June 2026 and kicks off with a teacher retreat that provides training in the Poetry Inside Out curriculum. You’ll participate in monthly virtual meetings with other Fellows and receive ongoing support and a generous stipend. Applications are due September 13. Questions? This year we’ll celebrate our annual Day of Translation on Thursday, September 26. Co-hosted this year by The Center for Fiction(opens in a new tab) in Brooklyn, NY, this day-long symposium of provocative panels on language and literature will conclude with a keynote address delivered by National Book Award-winning poet and translator Don Mee Choi.
This year’s panels include “Fiction and Translation,” an investigation of the connections and boundaries between writing and translating; “Desert Poetics and Translation,” an examination of what is illuminated when translated literature is approached from the common ground of environment rather than language or nation; and “Typography and Translation,” an exploration of the intersections between the arts of typography and translation.
Event admission is free, but registration is recommended.

Giovanna Lomanto is a poet and essayist with a tendency to play the same song on repeat until she has memorized every last note. She received her BA in English at U.C. Berkeley and finished her MFA at NYU, during which time she published two poetry collections and two mixed media chapbooks.
