All things translation—October 2024 at CAT

Oct 3, 2024 | By Giovanna Lomanto

Our monthly roundup of translation and publishing news, plus updates in literature and arts education you may have missed!

Ah yes, the arrival of autumn! Just the right time of year to pick up a few books in translation to read by the fireplace—with a cozy cardigan and a mug of herbal tea.

CAT is proud to present a glorious pair of Two Lines Press titles for your TBR pile. The latest addition to the Calico Series, Cigarettes Until Tomorrow, is available now—it features contemporary Romanian poets writing with black humor about profound moments from their daily lives—and we’re also gearing up for the release of Ixelles, translated by Nichola Smalley, Johannes Anyuru’s thrilling novel about the inescapability of the past and the power of fiction.

When Two Lines Press published Layla Martínez’s Woodworm last spring, we knew that Annie McDermott and Sophie Hughes had a special translation to share with the world. We did not know that, just a few months later, Woodworm would be longlisted for the National Book Award. Huge thanks to the National Book Foundation for this recognition—it’s an honor to be on this list!

We’ve got a packed calendar of literary events in October! This month is the annual Litquake(opens in a new tab) festival! CAT is sponsoring the “Words Around the World” series, international readings and happenings taking place across San Francisco. You can find events spotlighting international literature by searching for “Words Around the World” on the Litquake schedule(opens in a new tab).

CAT’s imprint Two Lines Press(opens in a new tab) is currently accepting submissions for not one, but TWO different collections for our Calico Series!

We’re looking for translations of work by female Afghan poets from Afghanistan or the diaspora, translated from any language, and written in any style. For the second collection, we’re looking for English translations of ghost stories from around the world. We’re particularly interested in stories that draw upon a place’s history, politics, landscape, or mythology (short stories only, not novel excerpts).
