Here’s your chance to be part of a conversation with Ottilie Mulzet, winner of the 2013 Best Translated Book Award for her translation of Seiobo There Below, by Hungarian author Laszlo Krasznahorkai.
Mulzet will talk about the work she did with Krasznahorkai’s intricate sentences, and about just what is going on in this astonishing book. She will also be talking about projects of Krasznahorkai’s that she is currently working on, and which will be published in upcoming years.
Ottilie Mulzet has translated the work of László Krasznahorkai, Szilárd Borbély, Gábor Schein, György Dragomán, László Földényi, and Edina Szvoren. She was awarded the National Book Award in Translated Literature in 2019 for her translation of Krasznahorkai’s Baron Wenckheim’s Homecoming. She lives in Prague.
László Krasznahorkai is a Hungarian novelist and screenwriter known for his difficult and demanding novels, often labeled as postmodern, with dystopian and melancholic themes. He is considered by many to be the most important living Hungarian author, and has been a major literary figure in his native country since publishing his first book, Satantango, in 1985. He has written five novels and won numerous prizes, including the 2015 Man Booker International Prize, and the 2013 Best Translated Book Award in Fiction for Satantango.
