Sergey Gandlevsky is one of Russia’s most respected contemporary poets and the author of four books of poems , a novel, a memoir, and a collection of essays. He began his writing career in the 1970s and 80s documenting underground life in the twilight of the Soviet regime. Gandlevsky’s poems explore cynicism, sentimentality, self-loathing and disdain, mixing traditional poetic form with literary references and pop culture. Gandlevsky’s books have been shortlisted for all of the major Russian literary prizes, and he won both the Little Booker Prize and the Anti-Booker Prize in 1996 for his poetry and prose.
