Elena Poniatowska

Elena Poniatowska is a French-born Mexican author of more than three dozen books. Born in Paris in 1932 to a descendent of Poland’s last royal family and a hacienda heiress, Poniatowska moved with her family to Mexico in 1942 and has lived there ever since. She notably wrote “La Noche de Tlatelolco” (“The Night of Tlatelolco”), an oral history of the brutal 1968 army massacre of student protesters in Mexico City. She was the first woman to win Mexico’s National Journalism Award and the fourth woman to win the Miguel de Cervantes Prize. (photo credit: image courtesy of Planeta de libros México)
