Translation Workshop with Margaret Jull Costa
Center for the Art of Translation | 582 Market Street, Suite 700 | San Francisco, CA
We at the Center are honored to offer Bay Area translation-lovers a chance to learn from one of the very best. On August 12, we’ll be offering a workshop with Margaret Jull Costa.
In this one-time-only translation workshop you will learn from one of the legends of literary translation. Costa is the translator of Nobel laureate Jose Saramago, Javier Marias, Bernardo Atxaga, and many more.
During a rare visit to the United States Costa will lead a two-hour class on the translation of a piece of Spanish-language writing. Workshop participants will collectively work through a selection of Javier Marias’s work, and participate in in-depth group discussion about various strategies and craft considerations surrounding the art of translation. You will receive rare insight from one of translation’s most lauded figures.
Margaret Jull Costa has worked as a translator for over thirty years, translating the works of many Spanish and Portuguese writers, among them novelists: Javier Marías, José Saramago, Eça de Queiroz, and Teolinda Gersão, and poets: Fernando Pessoa, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, Mário de Sá-Carneiro, and Ana Luísa Amaral. Her work has brought her many prizes, most recently the Premio Valle-Inclán for On the Edge by Rafael Chirbes.
