Born in Melo, Cerro Largo, Uruguay, Juana de Ibarbourou was one Latin America’s most famous poets. In 1914 she married and later bore a son. After a somewhat peripatetic existence, the family moved to Montevideo in 1918. Ibarbourou’s poetry is rich in sensual images and deals with the themes of love and nature.
