Karel Capek (1890–1938) is best-known to the English-speaking world for his plays and novels, especially for his 1920 play R.U.R.: Rossum’s Universal Robots, which introduced the word “robot” to the world. He was also a master of the short story, a translator of French poetry, an essayist, and a nonstop journalist.
