Sam Grolmes was a published poet and fiction writer. He taught English and literature at Japanese universities, both as a Fulbright instructor and as an Associate Professor in a private college. His translations of modern Japanese poetry and fiction have appeared in numerous literary journals. In collaboration with his wife, Yumiko Tsumura, he produced two volumes of translations of Japan’s foremost postwar poet, Ryuichi Tamura, whom they first met in 1967 at the University of Iowa. At that time, Grolmes was the Assistant Director of the International Writing Program, and Tsumura was working on her Master of Fine Arts in Poetry and Translations.
