W. D. Snodgrass

W.D. Snodgrass (1926–2009) was a poet and a translator of troubadour songs, many of which appeared in his Selected Translations (BOA Editions, 1998), winner of the Harold Morton Landon Translation Award from the Academy of American Poets. His first collection of poetry, Heart’s Needle, was published in 1959 and received the Pulitzer Prize in 1960, and he published numerous additional books of poetry. He also produced two books of literary criticism and six volumes of translation. His honors include fellowships from The Academy of American Poets, the Ford Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Institute of Arts and Letters, and the National Endowment for the Arts. [Photo credit: Oscar White/Corbis]
