Dal silenzio

By Younis Tawfik - Iraq, 1957-present
Transitional | Identity, Language

Dal silenzio della remota memoria
è scaturito un volto
lo riconosci:
dentro di te si è raccolto
come gocce di luce,
e tu lo leggi:
sparisce quando vuole,
e non ritorna,
e dietro quelle mura infine sfuma.
All’improvviso
apri le ali,
e nella solitudine dello spazio
libero ti abbandoni.

Bio

Younis Tawfik is a writer, journalist, and university professor. Born in Mosul, Iraq, he moved to Italy when he was 22 years old. Tawfik has said that “For me, language is the land. Whoever writes in the language of the land belongs to that land and the language itself becomes his land. I love writing in Italian because, just like Arabic, it offers great flexibility and plenty of room for creativity.”
