When Do Acacias Bloom?
Who is it that sustains this world? The summer
will be so beautiful. We bathed in the stream

Kto podtrzymuje ten świat? Będzie piękne lato.
Kąpaliśmy się w rzece, ponad skrajem lasu,
życie spakowane w koszyku i żółte czereśnie,
bardzo wodniste. Nie chcę opowiadać,
ale stało się. Tato, mama i dziecko, a wokoło
sprawy zieleni: wielka, nieporadna przestrzeń,
i forma, która nas nie chce. Opowiadam historię
narodu, który wszedł do ziemi i urosła na nim
trawa, mlecze i czarnuszka, a także wysokie
rumianki, piękne, z gorejącym okiem. Który
stał się ziemią i wyrosła z niego trawa, mieczyki,
dmuchawce, a zwłaszcza dmuchawce. Jak
potoczy się lato? Jest za dużo przestrzeni,
ponad łąką, kominami, ponad pustym sklepem.
Niechże ktoś nadejdzie, człowiek albo zwierzę
i zdmuchnie nas, zdmuchnie, polecimy dalej.

Who is it that sustains this world? The summer
will be so beautiful. We bathed in the stream
at forest’s edge, life packed inside a basket,
such juicy yellow cherries. I don’t want
to tell this, but it’s done. A father, mother, child
and all around green things: ungainly space
and shape that doesn’t want us. I am telling
the story of a nation that has come to earth
and grown grass, gladioli, nigella,
and gorgeous mayweeds, eyes ablaze. A nation
that then became the earth, rose up from it,
dandelions and their puffs, especially their puffs.
How will summer progress? There’s much too much
of space above the meadow, chimneys, empty shops.
May there be someone to come, man or beast,
to blow, to blow us out, we’ll soar up higher.

Tomasz Różycki is the author of over a dozen books of poetry and prose of widespread international acclaim, with work translated into many languages. A recipient of the Wisława Szymborska Prize, the Kościelski Award, the Prix Grand Continent, and a DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Fellowship, he is an “Ambassador of the New Europe” and one of the leading writers of his generation in Poland. He has served on the juries for the Zbigniew Herbert International Literary Award and the Swiss Prix Jan Michalski. In the U.S., he has been featured at the Unterberg Poetry Center, the Princeton Poetry Festival, and the Brooklyn Book Festival. He also teaches and translates French literature.
Mira Rosenthal is the author of Territorial, a Pitt Poetry Series selection and finalist for the INDIES Book of the Year award, and The Local World, winner of the Wick Poetry Prize. A recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, a Wallace Stegner Fellowship from Stanford University, and residencies at Hedgebrook and MacDowell, she is an associate professor of creative writing at Cal Poly. Her translations of Polish poetry include Krystyna Dąbrowska’s Tideline and Tomasz Różycki’s Colonies, which won the Northern California Book Award and was shortlisted for numerous other prizes, including the International Griffin Poetry Prize and the Oxford Weidenfeld Translation Prize.
