Like a silver coin
わが顏は似たり 銀貨に
月よりも蒼む寂しさ
わが顏は似たり 銀貨に
月よりも蒼む寂しさ
さて買ふは男爵夫人(バロネス)の名と
歎きつつ 鏡をとれば
月よりも蒼む寂しさ
わが顏は似たり 銀貨に
Like a silver coin
lonelier
blue than
the moon
hearing of
her marriage to the baron, and
her becoming thus a baroness,
I stare into the mirror,
with regret:

Ryūnosuke Akutagawa (1892–1927), born in Tokyo, Japan, was the author of more than three-hundred fifty works of fiction and nonfiction. Japan’s premier literary award for emerging writers, the Akutagawa Prize, is named after him.
