In the midst of the current pandemic my colleagues and I remain dedicated to sharing the striking voices of international authors and translators. We are eager to publish more dazzling work in translation, both online and in the stunning editions you have come to expect, and we hope to gather with you in person again later this year to celebrate great books. Our fingers are crossed.
Our office is closed, but our staff continues the editorial and production work to publish books from Two Lines Press. We have some staggeringly good books coming up: you’re going to love Jazmina Barrera’s On Lighthouses, translated by Christina MacSweeney, and Masatsugu Ono’s Echo on the Bay, translated by Angus Turvill, is a slim masterpiece. We’re crestfallen these books and others may not get the attention they deserve.
Some people are predicting that 2020 will be a lost year for publishing.
The current shutdown has forced small businesses like our beloved independent bookstores to close, and literary events everywhere have been canceled. Before we meet again in person we will have lost thousands of dollars in sales. For many independent booksellers that champion literary translation prospects are even more stark.
You can help us and the entire literary community with a donation today.
The work of international authors and translators is frequently overlooked in the marketplace. That’s why small presses like Two Lines Press are so important.
And without our independent bookstore partners, many books in translation would never find an audience. In addition to the energy, attention, and care independent booksellers devote to readers, our books simply wouldn’t get into people’s hands without them.
We’re committed to doing everything we can to support our friends and colleagues across the country who are facing incredible challenges right now.
Between now and May 15, we will give 50% of all donations to the Book Industry Charitable (Binc) Foundation. Your gift will help us, and it will help independent booksellers affected by the crisis.
Your gift now keeps Two Lines Press going and helps sustain independent bookstores until we can gather again safely.
Please donate today.
I hope you will connect with us online during this challenging time. We can’t wait to see you again in person soon.
Be well, stay safe, keep reading.
