Join us for a party and performances by Lizzie Davis, George Henson, Mira Rosenthal, Cristy Stiles, Shabnam Nadiya, Kenneth Wong, and more to celebrate 25 years of Two Lines publishing groundbreaking international literature and Two Lines 31: Hauntings. Featuring treats by Dandelion Chocolate, cocktails by Mint & Mirth, food by Nopalito, and music by DJ Jimbo. Doors open at 7 pm, readings begin at 8 pm.
Lizzie Davis is a translator from Spanish and Italian to English and editor at Coffee House Press. Her recent projects include My First Bikini by Elena Medel (Jai-Alai Books) and a co-translation of Tell Me How It Ends: An Essay in Forty Questions with Valeria Luiselli (Coffee House Press). Her translation of Juan Cárdenas’s Ornamental was published by Coffee House Press in 2020.
George Henson is an assistant professor of Spanish Translation at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies. He is the translator of Sergio Pitol’s Trilogy of Memory and Mephisto’s Waltz: Selected Stories, as well as Elena Poniatowska’s The Heart of the Artichoke. His translations have appeared variously in the Guardian, Asymptote, the Paris Review, the Kenyon Review, Words Without Borders, World Literature Today, and Latin American Literature Today. His translation of Alberto Chimal’s novel The Most Fragile of Objects will be published in early 2020.
Shabnam Nadiya is a Bangladeshi writer and translator who has settled in California. A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, her work has been published in Flash Fiction International (W. W. Norton), One World (New Internationalist), Al Jazeera Online, Pank, Amazon’s Day One, Chicago Quarterly Review, Without Borders, and Gulf Coast. She translated Moinul Ahsan Saber’s novel The Mercenary (Seagull Books, 2018) and Shaheen Akhtar’s novel Beloved Rongomala (Bengal Lights Books, 2018; Seagull Books, forthcoming). She was named a Steinbeck Fellow for the 2019-20 academic year.
Mira Rosenthal is the author of Territorial, a Pitt Poetry Series selection and finalist for the INDIES Book of the Year award, and The Local World, winner of the Wick Poetry Prize. A recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, a Wallace Stegner Fellowship from Stanford University, and residencies at Hedgebrook and MacDowell, she is an associate professor of creative writing at Cal Poly. Her translations of Polish poetry include Krystyna Dąbrowska’s Tideline and Tomasz Różycki’s Colonies, which won the Northern California Book Award and was shortlisted for numerous other prizes, including the International Griffin Poetry Prize and the Oxford Weidenfeld Translation Prize.
Cristy Stiles is a French-English translator based in Los Angeles. She has an MFA in translation from Mills College and a BA in French literature from UC Berkeley. Her previous translations include the Metabarons graphic novel series by Alejandro Jodorowsky.
Kenneth Wong is a Burmese-American author and a language instructor. His short stories, essays, and poetry translations have appeared in The San Francisco Chronicle magazine, AGNI (Boston University), Eleven Eleven (California College of the Arts), The Irrawaddy, Myanmar Times, and more. He teaches beginning and intermediate Burmese at UC Berkeley.
